I have often wondered where dogs go in their dreams. In today’s world we take our dogs to restaurants, on vacations, and every place in between. I thought it would be fun to imagine where a sleeping dog might go. I start with a photograph of a dog, usually my own, and try to figure out what story the dog is telling me. I prefer dogs in funny poses, to keep the subject matter light and, because these poses make me laugh. I also like a good action shot, where the dog might be jumping but maybe looks like it could be skiing or diving. After I have figured out my concept, I decide whether it is a single dog adventure or one with a few dogs interacting in some way. I incorporate accessories to enhance each dog’s unique personality and begin the process of drawing the image on canvas. Finally, I begin the painting, making adjustments along the way to the subjects or background with color enhancements and extra details. I use acrylic paints. I water them down to create the effect of watercolors and build from there using thicker paints to add texture both visually and physically where needed. My dog paintings are whimsical narratives about expressing joy, contentment, and the satisfaction of a good experience. My use of bright and bold colors portrays a sense of a vibrant life full of energy, happiness and the will to go all in. That is what a dog is to me.
